When Dylan came across the story of a handful of surgeons in Rwanda attempting to address one of the world’s largest health crises, the idea for “The Making of a Surgeon” was born.
Two-thirds of the world’s population lack access to safe surgical care, resulting in a third of all preventable deaths each year – more than HIV, malaria and tuberculosis combined. In response, an ambitious initiative to train young surgeons across sub-Saharan Africa is underway, with a few Rwandan surgeons at its core.
Dylan decided he wanted to follow these surgeons, to gain a real sense of the people behind the surgical masks and to understand what drives them in the face of the enormous task ahead.
His hope is that this film will allow for the thoughts and actions of Drs Faustin, Vicky, Yves and Françoise to audiences far and wide.
Dylan’s award-winning films include BAFTA (Wales), Best Film Silverdocs FF, Goethe-Institute Film Prize in Leipzig, Best Film Art Doc Fest in Moscow, Winner Prix D’Italia, among others.
